"After the Fire Presentation" 2025

On Tuesday, May 20, Midland Park High School Seniors joined their peers at Ramsey High School for the After the Fire presentation—a moving and impactful program now in its sixth year of being offered to Midland Park students.

The presentation is based on the true story of a tragic dormitory fire at Seton Hall University on January 19, 2000. Set by arsonists, the fire swept through a freshman residence hall, killing three students and injuring fifty-eight others. Among the most severely injured were freshman roommates Shawn Simmons and Alvaro Llanos, who now travel the country sharing their experience in hopes of educating students about the importance of fire safety and responsible decision-making.

More than just a recounting of events, After the Fire is a powerful testament to the human spirit. Shawn and Alvaro speak candidly about their recovery and the emotional and physical challenges they faced. Their story conveys vital safety lessons and powerful life themes including courage, resilience, friendship, gratitude, and forgiveness.

Midland Park High School is proud to have partnered once again with the Senior Class of Ramsey High School to host this important event. Over the past six years, this program has left a lasting impression on our students, equipping them with both critical safety knowledge and a deeper appreciation for perseverance and community.

We thank Ramsey High School for their continued collaboration and extend our deepest gratitude to Shawn and Alvaro for their ongoing commitment to turning tragedy into a life-changing message for the next generation.
