Waldwick/Midland Park captures conference title in thrilling overtime victory and prepares to host Indian Hills in the opening round of the state tournament.
It has been an incredible season for the Waldwick/Midland Park football team, and Friday night provided another unforgettable moment. The team captured the NJIC Championship with a dramatic 35-34 overtime victory over Garfield on October 23, improving its record to an impressive 8-1 and adding another championship to an outstanding season.
The victory marked the team's second championship in three weeks, following a thrilling 43-42 overtime win over Rutherford to secure the NJIC Liberty Division title.
Throughout the season, Waldwick/Midland Park has demonstrated an ability to overcome adversity and deliver in the biggest moments. Friday's championship was no exception, as the team battled back from multiple deficits before putting together a game-tying touchdown drive in the final minutes of regulation.
Junior running back Luciano Mayer once again delivered an outstanding performance, finishing with 178 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Will Dell'Aglio also played a key role, including a crucial two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter that sent the game into overtime.
After taking the lead in overtime, Waldwick/Midland Park needed one final defensive stand to secure the championship. With Garfield attempting a two-point conversion for the win, senior defensive lineman Logan Feehan and his teammates came together to stop the runner just short of the goal line, setting off a celebration for the players, coaches, and supporters from both communities.
The championship reflects the tremendous commitment of the student-athletes, coaching staff, and everyone involved with this cooperative football program. Under the leadership of Head Coach Dan DiStasi, Waldwick/Midland Park has continued to build a program centered on hard work, accountability, and competing for one another.
Congratulations to Coach DiStasi, his entire coaching staff, and all of our Waldwick/Midland Park football players on this outstanding accomplishment!
