No voices will be used in class, as students learn a basic introduction to ASL and the communications of deaf culture. Visual-gestual activities include finger spelling, basic word vocabulary and sentence structure, use of body language and facial expression, and the describing of objects and location. This course is designed to meet the needs of family, employers, educators, human services providers and health professionals who use sign as a part of their daily and/or occupational responsibilities. Continues basic language and culture study. Offers the opportunity to build receptive and expressive ASL vocabulary in a non-voice setting with group practice. Topics include the use of signing space and further use of non manual components, including facial expression and body postures. This course is an introduction to one of the world’s most desirable languages.  Together we will explore the core components and fundamentals of the language such as: basic grammar, vocabulary, listening-comprehension, pronunciation and speaking ability. After having completed the course, students will be comfortable utilizing basic skills for travel purposes.  We will explore various topics such as numbers/telling time, weather, shopping, hotel and airport travel, as well as discussing common grammar and pronunciation pitfalls of the language.  Instructor: BARBARA SHANLEY

Continue to delve more deeply into one of the world’s most desirable languages. In this 9 week session we will continue to explore more complex grammatical structures. We will play games and engage in communicative activities that will help you to use these structures in freer speech. We will also be reading a number of texts in order to acquire a better understanding of how Italian is utilized both colloquially and in more literary contexts. This will also give us the opportunity to explore idiomatic language. This course is for those who have completed Italian–Beg. This course will focus on more advanced structures of the Italian language. We will work heavily both on understanding the grammatical structures and using them in appropriate contexts. We will also explore some literary treasures as well as some fun works!  In this course we will be working both from ”Italian Now” and extraneous materials which will be provided. This course is for those who have completed Italian Intermediate or Italian Advanced classes.
